Scripture:
“For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.” – Romans 7:19 (ESV)
We all face the challenge of knowing what we should do but not always doing it. Last night, my son reminded me that I should plan more date nights with my wife. Even though I don’t enjoy being reminded of things I already know to do, I realize it’s necessary. This led me to reflect on something deeper: why do I often fail to do what I know is right?
I’ve shared this before – my wife knows about my “dishwasher story” from childhood, where I consistently avoided doing what I was supposed to. Even now, I find this to be a recurring issue in my life. I know what’s right, yet I fail to do it. I believe many of us can relate.
The Apostle Paul speaks about this same struggle in the Bible. We often have a deep understanding of what is right, but we fall short in doing it. This is where other people can help—whether through reminders, encouragement, or even a bit of force. Sometimes, we need that outside perspective to push us in the right direction.
Take, for example, our health, taking care of the environment, or maintaining relationships. We know what is right, yet we often fail to follow through. It’s a pattern that I’ve noticed, not just in myself but in many others as well.
When someone points out our shortcomings, our first reaction is often to defend ourselves. We look for the few times we did things right and hold onto those moments, ignoring the many times we didn’t. Or, we look at the person offering advice and highlight their failures, using that as an excuse not to listen. But neither of these responses benefits us.
This is where our relationship with God and His Word comes into play. God’s Word is an undeniable source of truth. It doesn’t offer us a way out through excuses. It stands firm as the standard of what is right and wrong.
God’s Word to Us:
“My Word is infallible, pure, and a shield to those who trust in Me. I am the Lord, the Righteous Judge. I will give you true judgment and wisdom to live by. Listen to Me, and learn from Me. I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. The words I speak to you are life. Excuses don’t work with Me, for I judge you in righteousness, not in error. I see your heart, not just your actions. I see where you need to grow and how you can be better. Listen to Me. Don’t turn your back on Me. I am here to guide and instruct you. What you should do is what I say, not what others say.”
Reflection: Are there areas in your life where you know what’s right but struggle to do it? Reflect on how you respond when others remind you or hold you accountable. Today, ask God to help you listen, learn, and live according to His wisdom, without excuses.
Prayer: Lord, help me to do what is right, even when it’s difficult. Open my heart to correction and guidance, whether it comes from others or directly from You. Help me trust Your Word and follow Your ways. Amen.
