We hear people say it all the time:

“I’m living my best life.”

Usually, we’re talking about enjoying life—traveling, accomplishing goals, spending time with people we love, having financial security, or finally being able to do some of the things we’ve always wanted to do.

There’s nothing necessarily wrong with enjoying those things.

But during our latest Redefining Life teaching at Light House Ministries, we considered a much bigger question:

What if we’re defining our “best life” by something that was never meant to last?

Jesus teaches us not to lay up our treasures only on earth, but to lay up treasures in heaven. Why? Because everything we accumulate here is temporary.

That doesn’t mean this life is unimportant. This life is incredibly important. It is an opportunity God has given us to know Him, receive the salvation He offers through Jesus Christ, serve Him, love others, and prepare for eternity.

One of the illustrations we discussed was the difference between something appearing alive and actually possessing life.

A flower can still look beautiful after it has been cut, but it has been disconnected from its source. A fish taken out of the water may continue moving for a while, but it has been removed from the environment in which it was created to live.

Scripture tells us something similar happened to humanity because of sin. We became separated from the Giver of life.

That is why Jesus came.

He didn’t come merely to make our temporary lives more comfortable. He came so that people who were spiritually dead could be made alive.

Jesus said:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life.” — John 14:6

And John 3:16 reminds us that whoever believes in Him “should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

So perhaps our greatest life isn’t something we can completely experience here.

Through Christ, our greatest life is the life death cannot take away.

We invite you to watch the full teaching below and consider this question for yourself:

Am I investing primarily in what is temporary—or am I preparing for what is eternal?
