We all want to succeed.
But have we ever stopped long enough to ask:
Who defined success for us?
For some, success means financial security.
For others, it may be career advancement, marriage, a successful business, recognition, influence, possessions, or accomplishing a personal goal.
There is nothing inherently wrong with many of those things.
But during our latest Redefining Life teaching, we considered a deeper question:
What happens if we hit the target—and discover it was the wrong target?
A wrong definition can create a wrong pursuit.
And a wrong pursuit can leave us exhausted, disappointed, and still wondering why something seems to be missing.
Jesus gives us a different definition in the parable of the talents in Matthew 25.
A master entrusted different amounts to three servants.
Two faithfully used what they had been given.
When the master returned, both received the same affirmation:
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
One had been given more than the other, but that wasn’t the point.
The point was faithfulness.
That changes the way we understand success.
Success is not about comparing what God gave you with what He gave someone else.
Success is being faithful with what He entrusted to you.
That may include:
Your family.
Your relationships.
Your gifts.
Your resources.
Your work.
Your opportunities.
Your influence.
Your ability to share the Gospel.
Sometimes we spend so much time waiting for something greater that we overlook what God has already put in our hands.
But Jesus said:
“You were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things.” — Matthew 25:21
The next thing belongs to God.
Our responsibility is to faithfully steward what He has given us today.
So this week, consider:
What has God already entrusted to me?
And then ask:
Am I being faithful with it?
