Have you ever prayed for something over and over again, but after a while you stopped?
Maybe you became tired of waiting.
Maybe you assumed God’s silence meant no.
Maybe you wondered whether continuing to ask God for the same thing showed a lack of faith.
Jesus gives us an interesting answer in Luke 18:1–8.
He tells the story of a widow who repeatedly approached an unjust judge with one simple request.
She kept coming.
And Jesus tells us why He gave the parable:
“Men ought always to pray, and not to faint.”
Persistent Prayer Is Evidence of Faith
During our latest Light House Sunday Session, we considered something that helped us redefine faith.
Faith isn’t only something demonstrated when we receive what we’ve prayed for.
Sometimes faith is demonstrated while we’re still waiting.
Every time we return to God in prayer, we’re saying:
“Lord, I still believe You are able.”
That doesn’t mean we’re demanding that God do exactly what we want.
God’s wisdom is greater than ours.
His timing may be different.
Sometimes we aren’t ready.
Sometimes circumstances aren’t ready.
And sometimes God may have something better than what we’re requesting.
But none of those things mean we should stop talking to Him.
Your Prayer Doesn’t Have to Be Impressive
Something else stood out in the passage.
The widow’s request was simple:
“Avenge me of mine adversary.”
She didn’t change it into a more eloquent prayer.
She didn’t make it longer.
She simply kept coming.
God isn’t waiting for us to find impressive words.
We can come honestly and simply tell Him what’s on our hearts.
Giving It to God Doesn’t Mean We Stop Praying
During our discussion, an important distinction came up.
We often tell people:
“Lay it at Jesus’ feet.”
That can be a beautiful picture if we mean that we’re giving God control.
But giving Him control doesn’t mean we never pray about it again.
We surrender the outcome while continuing to seek Him.
What Did You Stop Praying About?
Perhaps there is something you once prayed about regularly.
A loved one.
A relationship.
Healing.
Direction.
A financial need.
Someone’s salvation.
A situation that seemed impossible.
And somewhere along the way, you stopped.
Jesus’ teaching gives us a simple encouragement:
Start praying again.
Continue asking.
Continue seeking.
Continue trusting.
Not because God owes us the answer we want, but because we still believe He is able.
And ultimately, remember:
Don’t give up on God, because He hasn’t given up on you.
Jesus demonstrated that at the cross.
Even at our worst, He loved us enough to take the penalty for our sin, die in our place, and rise again so that we could have life through Him.
